Books by Michael Wallis

Michael Wallis is best known in this area as the author of The Real Wild West: The 101 Ranch and the Creation of the American West, published in 1999, but he is also the  bestselling author of  Route 66 :  The Mother Road,  Billy the Kid, Pretty Boy  (which, as Tony Hillerman wrote, "brings the legendary Robin Hood of the Depression alive") , Wilma Mankiller and Oilman: the Life of Frank Phillips.
         
He helped to bring about the great revival of Route 66 in the 1990s with his remarkable journalistic and photographic travelogue, Route 66, which became an enormous bestseller.
A member of the National Writers Hall of Fame, Wallis has published over sixteen books and has won numerous honors and awards. He lectures nationally, and frequently appears on television.  
            
The Oklahoma Center for the Book awarded him the Arrell Gibson Award for Lifetime Achievement un 1999.  His books have been nominated for the National Book Award and on three occasions for the Pulitzer Prize.  He has won other prestigious awards and honors, including the 1994 Lynn Riggs Award from Rogers State College in Claremore.  In 1994 he was the first inductee into the Oklahoma Route 66 Hall of Fame, and in 1996 was inducted into the Oklahoma Professional Writers Hall of Fame.
         
Wallis was the voice of The Sheriff in the Golden Globe-winning, animated Pixar motion picture features, Cars and Cars II.   He has been lauded for his outstanding speaking voice, and when he reads from his works, fans are often heard to say they get "goose bumps" listening to him.
