Description

Introduction

-being at the heart of our business strategy because our people are our greatest asset, and we

recognize that a healthy, happy and committed

workforce is vital to our business success."

-Alex Gourlay, Co-Chief Operating Officer, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc.

The quote reflects the growing feeling of importance of the well-being of employees being

recognized and addressed by organizational leaders across the world. A poll conducted by Partners

in Leadership reflected that employees take more initiative, are better collaborators and care more

about their work when they are happier at their workplace (Corbridge, 2018). As such, efforts to

improve the well-being of employees has gained prominence for most organizations.

1.1 Positive Psychology

Positive psychology focuses on helping individuals lead a happy, healthy, and prosperous life. In

contrast with other branches of psychology that tend to focus on abnormal and dysfunctional

behaviors, positive psychology is centred towards helping people become happier. Seligman and

Csikszentmihalyi (2014) have described positive psychology as "a psychology of positive human

functioning ... that achieves a scientific understanding and effective interventions to build

thriving in individuals, families, and communities."
